A couple of months ago, an RET-aligned ANC leader had his membership temporarily suspended after he was arrested on serious charges relating to fraud and theft, it seems his legal troubles are set to get even more worse, after it was confirmed that the NPA has issued a warrant of arrest against him.
Former ANC Western Cape MPL, Danville Smith, was expected to appear at the Bellville Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday, however, he didn't avail himself nor his legal representatives did, and the NPA has since issued an arrest warrant against him.
Smith is facing corruption charges which occurred during his time as a councillor at the Cederberg municipality in 2016.
He was initially arrested for the matter in 2021, and subsequently withdrew from his position in the provincial legislature as per the hugely-contested step-aside rule.
Smith was quoted by 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘖𝘯𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 as saying the issued of the warrant of arrest was a grave misunderstanding, as he was not aware that he should have appeared in Bellville specialised crimes court, as he had been attending a different court matter in Vredendal.
The controversial politician has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent times, as he was also arrested for his alleged involvement in a Vredendal car theft syndicate with his two associates, for which police were tipped and pounced on them in June — which led to his suspension from the party.
Smith is a political powerhouse in the ANC Western Cape.
He is prominently known for being a fervent proponent of the Radical Economic Transformation agenda, and was expected to be a huge player at the province's upcoming elective conference.
In the meantime, the ANC has remained mum on his latest transgression. The provincial integrity commission might be forced to act against him again.
It is, therefore, one's opinion that the ANC should perhaps make a perfect example of Smith, by effectively expelling him from the party; the organisation cannot continue to preach accountability and renewal, while its senior leaders blatantly disregard the courts.
Atleast at long last, politicians are being charged by the NPA, as there have been accusations that the law enforcement agency tends to drag its feet when it comes to hauling political figures before the coals.
