Bheki Mtolo, the ANC provincial secretary says the province believes that it is significant to appoint a woman as the Premier of the province during Women’s Month, and this has also changed the narrative in the province.
"We did pride ourselves that during Women's Month we have elected comrade Nomusa Ncube-Dube as the Premier," said Bheki Mtolo.
Previously, men were the ones rotating the position of the Premier, but after Sihle Zikalala resigned, it paved way for a female to be nominated in that position.
Zikalala was booed and heckled at the conference which saw his slate being defeated. It was for this reason that he decided to voluntarily resign as he feared that the new ANC Provincial Executive Committee was going to humiliate him.
ANC in KwaZulu-Natal however says it initially turned down Sihle Zikalala's offer to resign but he insisted that he wanted to go, and that's why they had to honour his wish and let him go.
The nomination of Nomusa Ncube-Dube has made RET comrades happy who believe she will bring her expertise to the office of the Premier and is also the first female to hold that position in Kwa-Zulu Natal province where men have been dominating in that position.
"Welcome the first woman Premier in KZN...you're loved and supported by the people of KwaZulu-Natal. Congratulations and all the best," some said as they wished the new Premier well.
Nomusa Ncube-Dube is also known in Kwa-Zulu Natal province as the game changer, and RET comrades said they believe in her capabilities to lead. She was serving as the finance MEC in the province under Sihle Zikalala's tenure as Premier.
