Local government election set for the 1st of November 2021

Johannesburg - South Africans will go to the polls on the 1st of November. This was announced by Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who had to revise the date of the local government elections following the Constitutional Court judgement. Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has declared November 1, as the day where South Africans can select their new local government representatives.

"After consultation with the IEC, we have come to the determination that this year's Local Government Elections will be held on the 1st of November 2021. This is in in accordance with the Constitution, read with the Municipal Structures Act, as the Act prescribes that elections must be held within 90 days after the conclusion of a five-year term of local government. We will officially proclaim this date on the 20th September 2021, after the voter registration weekend" said Dlamini-Zuma.

This is the first time in history where South Africans will cast their ballot on a Monday. Unlike in the past, elections are usually held on a Wednesday.

"We could have chosen the originally proclaimed day of the 27th of October 2021, but we have chosen the most outer date as the IEC indicated that it will need as much time as possible to prepare for the elections. The IEC having not had the registration weekend earlier and having hoped for the Constitutional Court to postpone the elections now they have a very short time, unfortunately the outer date does not fall on a Wednesday it falls on the Monday" said Dlamini-Zuma.

While South Africans are in the midst of a pandemic, government says Political parties will be allowed to campaign but with limitations.

Those who still need to register to take part in the 2021 local government elections have been given another voter registration weekend as per the Constitutional Court judgement.

The date for these elections will officially be proclaimed on the 20th of September.
