Zikalala In Shock As 'Top' ANC Leader Is Shot Dead This Morning

For weeks now, we have extensively reported about the prevalence of politically influenced killings in most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, it is scourge that has the hallmarks of a Hollywood gangster film.

Although a myriad of theories have been adopted to try to elucidate and carefully decipher the genesis of the problem that has since reached apocalyptic proportions, it seems there is no tangible solution just yet.

Reacting to the tragic passing away of former Member of the ANC provincial legislature, Zibuse Mlaba, who died on Thursday in a hail of bullets, a visibly shook KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Sihle Zikalala desperately reiterated a "need to silence guns in resolving political differences."

It is understood that Mlaba, 65, was gunned down the Mafia-esque style at a Shopping centre in Cato Ridge. According to a police investigation, it was a clear pre-planned assassination - of course politically influenced.

Describing his political work throughout Mlaba's political career in the province, Zikalala waxed lyrical about the significant contribution he made, saying when the province was experiencing spates of violence between the ANC and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the early 1990s prior to the advent of our democratic dispensation, Mlaba was among those who helped to calm the situation.

Mlaba was quoted verbayin in 1993 saying, "the political atmosphere in KZN was such that each person had to choose which side of the political discourse they belonged in, due to the ANC-IFP tensions."

And his family's affiliation with the ANC came at huge cost in 1988, when his brother was assassinated while watching television in his home. And it is sad that, in 2021, he has also suffered the same fate. Terrible.

Inferentially, one suspects that Mlaba was killed due to his political activism, one cannot entirely rule out the possibility of traditional affairs being the cause of his death, because unlike in other provinces, in KwaZulu-Natal politics and traditional matters are intertwined.

The incidence of the political killings in the country is quite alarming, and there is already a discussion taking place between civil society organisations and government to get to the bottom of the problem.

What do you make of Mlaba's killing. Was it a politically influenced killing?
