Some past presidents of south Africa have at one point lost someone close to them. In this article, we look at the past presidents who lost a son.

Nelson Mandela Lost 2 sons

1. Nelson Mandela's eldest son, Thembekile "Thembi" Mandela, was killed in a car accident while his father was serving a life sentence on Robben Island. Mandela, who was always a brother figure to many of his inmates, was heartbroken that he was not allowed to attend Thembi's funeral or have access to details about the fatal crash by the authorities. Three cars collided on the fog-shrouded Touws River road, killing four people and injuring another four.

2. Makgatho Lewanika Mandela (26 June 1950 – 6 January 2005) was Nelson Mandela's son from his first marriage to Evelyn Mase. He is Ndaba Mandela's father. On January 6, 2005, he died of AIDS in Johannesburg.

Zondi, his second wife, died on July 13, 2003, at the age of 46. Her cause of death was initially given as pneumonia; however, after Makgatho's death, his son from a previous marriage, Mandla, later revealed that her pneumonia was a complication of AIDS.

"Let us give publicity to HIV/AIDS and not hide it," Nelson Mandela said when announcing his son's death. "The only way to make it appear like a normal illness like tuberculosis or cancer is to always come out and say somebody has died because of HIV/AIDS, and people will stop viewing it as something extraordinary."

Thank Mbeki Lost A Son

3. Former South African President Thabo Mbeki and his wife Olive Mpahlwa have a son named Monwabisi Kwanda Mpahlwa. His disappearance and presumed assassination by South African authorities has piqued international interest.

In 1959, Monwabisi Kwanda Mbeki, also known as Kwanda, was born in Butterworth, Eastern Cape, to 16-year-old Thabo Mbeki and his high school sweetheart Olive Mphahlwa. Thabo had to pay a fine for impregnating an underage girl, and he had to give five head of cattle as a punishment.

Kwanda grew up with Olive's family until he was ten years old, when he moved in with Thabo's mother, Epainette Mbeki (also known as Ma Mofokeng), until matriculation.

Jacob Zuma Lost A Son

4. Vusi Nhlakanipho Zuma, the son of former President Jacob Zuma, died as a result of lupus, according to a family representative.

"On July 1, 2018, [he] passed away from complications of systemic lupus erythematosus, also known as lupus."
