Following rumours that alleged parliament arsonist Zandile Mafe tested positive for Covid-19, his lawyer has denied those claims.

Sowetan Live reported that earlier this week, reports surfaced that Mafe had tested positive for covid-19, but his lawyer, Luvuyo Godla, stated that he had yet to be notified.

“I am yet to get any confirmation. I will treat those reports as hearsay for now," said his lawyer Luvuyo Godla.

Godla went on to say that even if Mafe tested positive, he would still be available for bail on Saturday because he would need to isolate only for eight days.

Mafe is set to bring a formal bail application on Saturday.

Magistrate Zamekile Mbalo also referred Mafe to Valkenberg Hospital after the state declared that he had paranoid schizophrenia.

According to the prosecution, district surgeon Dr. Zelda van Tonder recommended that Mafe undergo mental observation, which Mbalo agreed to and postponed until February 11.

Mafe is accused of violating a number of laws, including the Protection of Constitutional Democracy Against Terrorist and Related Activities Act.
