The president of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, reintroduced the 350 in July this year following the extended lockdown and the continuing of the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant was previously introduced but due to a shortage of funds, it came to an end earlier this year in April after running for the whole year since 2020.
The president, together with the government, has made a decision to introduce the grant with the aim of helping the poor and the unemployed during the pandemic. This is due to the fact that many people's jobs were cut short or have been terminated as a result of business running losses because of COVID-19.
It's been three months as of October 2021 since the introduction of the grant by the president. Qualifying beneficiaries have received the payment for August and September and are awaiting October 2021.
However, even though the grant has been introduced with the aim of assisting the poor, not only are poor people receiving the grants. There are those who come from rich families and those who are stable with odd jobs. But they have applied for the grant and have been accepted since their names are not registered in the UIF.
On Twitter, a man posted a photo of himself eating ice cream from the entire 5 litre bucket. The guy captioned that he was enjoying the 350 grant he received from the government. Some people in the comments section have applauded him for at least buying himself nice things. While others have stated that some people require this money to purchase necessities for survival, others simply wish to spend it on leisure activities such as ice cream.
What are your thoughts on the guy? Do you think that for him to upload such a photo, he is portraying that he is not in need of the money? Drop your comments below.
