After the minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma's proclamation of November 1 as the election date, the fever of political campaigning has already swept through the country, as parties are on the ground to attempt to sway the minds of the people to vote for them.
As is the case on campaign trails, political leaders sometimes make promises that are unrealistic, as they do so to sensationalise citizens into voting for them. Of course, South Africans at large are facing a wide range of challenges, be it poor service delivery, lack of employment opportunities, and the issue of undocumented immigrants.
And one could argue that there has not been any leader across the South African political sphere, who has as passionately and animatedly spoke about the issue of undocumented immigrants, in the same way as Action SA President Herman Mashaba.
The former Johannesburg Mayor has elucidated quite a mouthful of societal issues that have been as a result of undocumented foreigners.
He has before been quoted indicating that crimes such as robberies, carjackings etc were mainly perpetrated by them.
Meanwhile, today in Joburg, he told his supporters that the fact that there are many undocumented foreigners who are doing business in the country without employing locals will be brought to an end if he gets elected.
"We will not allow undocumented people to be in SA. If you don’t have documents you can’t be here. You can’t operate businesses if you can’t employ South Africans. We won’t allow any other country to dictate to us. We can’t inherit their problems," Mashaba said.
While still at it, Mashaba furthermore stated that, if he is elected the new mayor of the Metro, he will put an end the ANC's cadre deployment policy, particularly in key management positions, saying when he was the mayor of the city between 2016-2019, he replaced quite a lot of people who were not effective in their work, but did he faced plenty of scurrilous attacks for it.
"ActionSA Mashaba:We will get rid of cadres, I was criticized for getting rid of experience. Experience in what ? Stealing ? Am going to get rid of all these cadres. We don’t need experienced thieves," he added.
The issue of undocumented immigrants elicited extreme reactions from South Africans on twitter, with many indicating that Mashaba's message was resonating with the and saying are more than willing give his their vote, come the election day.
Do you think Mashaba is truthful in his proposition that he will deal decisively with the illegal immigration?
