Sihle Zikalala is back with a new position

11 August 2022

A strange thing happened in Kwa Zulu Natal cabinet which has never happened before.

Although it is not new for someone who holds a high position in government to return to a lower position but it is for the first time in history of democracy and in the province of Kwa Zulu Natal.

It will be remembered that the late Frederik William ( F.W) de Klerk use to be the state president from 1989 to 1994 under the apartheid government and went on to take a lower position of being the deputy president from 1994 to 1996 under the democratic government, with Nelson Mandela as the president.

Now, something similar to that has happened in Kwa Zulu Natal.

Last week, Sihle Zikalala resigned as the premier of the province without even completing his term as he took the reigns of being the premier from 2019 during the general elections.

His term ends in 2024 but the ANC's general elections which were held last month has made him to resign.

Zikalala got defeated by Sboniso Duma in the position of the chairperson and he cited allegations from the delegates that accused him of betraying former President Jacob Zuma as the reason for his defeat.

On Monday, the ANC announced Nomusa Dube Ncube as their premier candidate who will replace him. She was successfully voted for on Wednesday at the legislature sitting and got sworn in as the new premier.

In his resignation, Zikalala stated that he remains a loyal servent of the party and will go anywhere the party deploys him.

While many thought it is the end of Zikalala in KZN politics as he also failed to make it to the ANC's provincial executive council, they were proven wrong on Thursday.

Premier Nomusa Dube Ncube announced her new cabinet and made some changes.

She shocked many people when she announced Sihle Zikalala as an MEC of Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).

This has many people left in surprise as it has never happened that someone who use to be a premier, accepts a demotion to a lower position of being an MEC.

However, Zikalala was commenced for his action and putting the organisation forward.
