IT DOESN'T RAIN BUT IT POURS FOR THE RULING PARTY AS CHICKENS HAVE COME HOME TO ROOST.
On Monday, the eThekwini council convened a meeting to elect leaders, however it had to be adjourned after it encountered lot of obstacles.
The sitting of this meeting now hangs in the balance and with it the future of the ANC's reign in the metro.
The IFP made a- turn and said they will nolonger be voting with the ANC in electing the Mayor. This comes after they learnt that the ANC has elected Mxolisi Kaunda as the Mayoral candidate.
Angry IFP members from Umlazi held a protest outside Moses Mabhida Stadium where the meeting was being held. Another group of ANC supporters, most of them being women, also interrupted the meeting as they marched inside and protested.
Power failure also became another obstacle in this meeting which led it to be adjourned and a new date will be selected.
While the speaker, Thabani Nyawose of the ANC made it through without the helpof the IFP, when the time came for the election of the rest of the officials, including the Mayor, cracks between the IFP and ANC agreement on governance in hung councils were so visible that the latter councillors found every excuse to delay the proceedings.
The ANC NEC decidedto field Mxolisi Kaunda as the Mayoral candidate.
First, the ANC requested the meeting adjourn for lunch. Then the ANC caucus again halted proceedings with a request for a "health opinion of the gathering for safety against Covid 19.
The ANC also lost the Amajuba municipality in Newcastle where it had 22 seats and the IFP 18, the IFP voted with other parties, including the DA. They won the municipality leaving the ANC in the lurch.
In Kwa Nongoma, where the IFP had a majority, it teamed up with the EFF, getting the Mayoral position and the EFF got the deputy mayor position.
