Is the ANC dying yet? No? Keep going, Cyril

I'm not embarrassed to confess that my assessment of Cyril Ramaphosa was incorrect. On the contrary, it's a comfort to be able to announce publicly that I think Ramaphosa may go down in history as the president who rescued us all. If you believe I'm being sarcastic, I understand. After all, I am a writer of thoughts that are often less than sincere; so much so that people sometimes believe I am kidding when I am not.ANC president <a class=Cyril Ramaphosa addresses supporters during a local government election campaign in Limpopo. I had an insight a few years ago, for example. After a decade of being stressed, enraged, and demoralised by the belief that the ANC was a government that was failing miserably at uplifting the people of South Africa, I came to understand that it is, in fact, a boiler-room Ponzi scheme that is doing an excellent job of enriching the entrenched insiders for whom it now operates.

When I described this insight, several readers found it amusing, figuring it was satirical exaggeration. It was not and is not. Without exaggeration, I think that the ANC of Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela has been turned into an actual, non-metaphorical private bank for South Africa's new elite. I believe this because I have eyes, and I see just one thing that the ANC administration has produced in large quantities over the past decade: politically linked multimillionaires.See the source image

I realize that all of this sounds fairly cynical, perhaps even defeatist; but abandoning the patently false belief that the ANC is a government was a liberating moment for me, freeing me from the stress, confusion, and endless disappointment that come with trying to impose a moral belief system on completely immoral subject matter, much like watching all three Godfather films in a state of bewilderment because you've been told they're romantic comedies.

This new viewpoint – that SA is not being administered inefficiently by politicians, but is being looted extremely effectively by a new breed of Randlords – explained a great deal. This new viewpoint — that SA is not being administered inefficiently by politicians, but is being looted extremely effectively by a new breed of Randlords – explained a great deal. I now recognized that the ANC's inability to provide services or maintain infrastructure was not an exception. On the contrary, it was natural and predictable: burglars target banks in order to loot them, not to repair the fourth-floor bathroom.See the source image
