The embarrassing Sofagate repercussions of a missed handshake at the Africa summit – POLITICO
According to the President of the European Commission, Ukraine will be given the green light to begin the process of joining the European Union within weeks.
On Friday, Ursula von der Leyen handed over the official questionnaire to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, marking the beginning of the country's long-awaited accession to the European Union.
The questionnaire is the official procedure through which the Commission analyzes Ukraine's readiness to proceed with the accession process prior to awarding Ukraine candidate nation status and commencing accession discussions. It is available on the Commission's website.
The EU's decision on Ukraine's request is often "a matter of years" in the EU's eyes, but von der Leyen believes it will be "a matter of weeks" on this particular occasion.
Zelensky, who has repeatedly voiced his wish to become a member of the EU since Russia's invasion, has claimed that he will return the papers within a week of receipt.
"Russia will be thrown into economic, financial, and technological disaster, whereas Ukraine is heading towards a European future," von der Leyen said, implying that Ukraine will be given the green light to proceed with its EU membership bid.
