On March 3, 1981, Julius Sello Malema, a politician and activist from South Africa, was born. He was elected to the House of Representatives and is the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, a political organization he created in July 2013. He presided over the African National Congress Youth League from 2008 until 2012. Malema joined the African National Congress (ANC) when he was nine years old and remained a member until he was expelled at age 31 in April 2012. He gained notoriety for backing Jacob Zuma, the ANC president who ultimately took office as president of South Africa.

He was touted to as the "next leader" of South Africa by both Zuma and the Premier of the Limpopo Province, Cassel Mathale. In less favourable depictions, he is characterized as a "reckless populist" who poses a threat to South Africa's stability and racial unrest.

Koko Sarah, Malema's grandmother who raised him after his mother passed away, passed away on May 4, 2019, the night before the Economic Freedom Fighters' final rally before the South African general elections on May 8.

Malema was found guilty of using hate speech in both March 2010 and September 2011. In November 2011, he was expelled from the ANC for five years for causing strife within the group. After singing "Dubul' ibhunu" ("Shoot the Boer"), he was found guilty of hate speech again in 2011; the conviction was affirmed on appeal, and he was expelled from the ANC.

Malema was detained in 2012 and accused of racketeering, money laundering, and fraud. After repeated delays brought on by the National Prosecuting Authority, the case was dismissed by the courts in 2015 amid allegations that the charges were politically motivated. But in 2018, the Afrikaner civil rights group AfriForum declared that it would pursue a private case against Malema for alleged corruption.

The oratory prowess of Malema is well known. He married his longtime partner in a secret ceremony in his tightly guarded hometown of Seshego in 2014. Their first kid, Munzhedzi, was born in 2016. Kopano, their second son, was born in 2018.

Malema has a son via a prior relationship with Maropeng Ramohlale who goes by the name of Ratanang.
