‘Tension with Irvin Jim exacerbated Saftu divisions’ – Vavi

Vavi, a journalist, was born in Durban, where she currently lives. She was born into a family of traders, who owned numerous mills and trading businesses that catered to the local black community, while also serving as a supplier of raw materials to other factories. [[balancing the scales]] Vavi’s family has a long history in the mining and manufacturing industries, and she is the first of her family to attend university. As far back as she can remember, Vavi has been interested in science, particularly in medicine, and has had her interests in science further solidified

Prior to the election, tension had been brewing between Vavi and Saftu, with the party leader and his team accusing the traditionalist party of “disrespecting” and “attacking” other black leaders and accusing Vavi of running as a “black voice” rather than the party’s, in an effort to ensure Vavi did not win the general elections.

“Tension with Irvin Jim exacerbated Saftu divisions,” Vavi said in an interview. “I always felt that it was important to find a middle ground and have him understand that.”
