Jacqueline Mkhize, who sits on a $1.3 billion chair, has spent nearly a decade keeping her husband out of jail, dodging questions about the lavish lifestyle lived by the often-absent first lady.

Mkhize Inc, the sprawling empire of South African ministers, oversaw at least N1.4bn in state spending at the end of last year but spent around only N5bn on services, without providing any details. In its annual report, published this week, Mkhize Inc said the “unprecedented economic distress” in the country in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic had forced it to extract money from “off-budget” sources to keep afloat.

Mkhize Inc is an umbrella organization for managing nine institutions - the Presidency, the National Council of Churches in SA (NCCSA), the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), the National Council for the Blind (NCB), the National School of Public Health (NSPH), the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), the South African Council for Social Development (SACSD), the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). It is the largest of the nine organizations under Mkhize Inc. and has a staff

So far, $27.8 billion has been spent by the Mkhize family on R24.8 billion worth of luxury homes and cars, according to The Times of South Africa. This includes buying three homes in four months, including a $1.8m waterfront estate in Malibeng, a $1.1m penthouse and a $2.6m oceanfront penthouse in Durban.
