OPINION:The Silence Of Wike And His Allies Should Worry PDP After Saying North Can Run For President

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is one of the most influential Governors in Nigeria who has a lot to say about his party’s activities.

Wike and his main allies are mainly from the South: Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State and some other key PDP members pushing the North to take over the office of National Chairman. According to a report in The Punch, they did this to give way to the South to get the ticket to the PDP presidency. This is because it has been the PDP’s tradition for many years that the National Chairman and the presidential candidate cannot come from the same region (South or North).

This means that if the National Chairman is from the North, the presidential candidate will be from the South. However, the PDP shocked many party members and other Nigerians when it gave a nod to the North to still compete for the President under the party in 2023. It was part of the previously agreed agreement. Northern leaders endorsed Senate President Iyorchia Ayu, as their consensus candidate for PDP National Chairman.

Since that judgment was made, Wike and his allies have continued to calculate the silence. The always -said Wike didn’t say anything. Makinde was as silent as Emmanuel. Obaseki also did not say anything but he visited President Muhammadu Buhari days ago for reasons not explained. Clearly, the PDP leadership’s decision to allow the North to still compete for the presidential ticket could be mismanaged by Wike and his allies who favored the South to make the party’s flag bearer. . So, the PDP should be bothered for a number of reasons.

First, Wike and others may withdraw their strong support for the PDP. There have been reports that Wike is the party’s chief financier. Wike also said this in his speech at the PDP NEC as the party sought to settle its feud with the undisputed PDP National Chairman Prince Uche Secondus. If he and his allies withdraw their financial and other supports they have given to the party, it could affect the PDP.

Likewise, they may decide to oppose the decision at the eleventh hour. Opposing this decision at the eleventh hour could have been a big surprise for the party. This is why the party needs to know what their stance is on the issue. Wike, Makinde, Obaseki, Emmanuel and other politicians want to push what they believe will favor them. Allowing the North to still compete for the seat is less fair to the South. They may oppose it later.

In addition, they can choose not to return anyone who comes out as a PDP carrier from the North. In this case, they may choose to remain silent and avoid playing the main roles in the party’s campaign if someone from the North wins the ticket. Some of the PDP Governors who later defected from the party did this different thing months before their defection. This has a huge impact on celebration opportunities.

Finally, Wike and his camp have another option. That option can be considered as a last resort. If they feel cheated or not given the opportunity they deserve by the PDP, they can choose to go to another party to be given the ticket to the South in 2023. However, this could be a last resort if the PDP cannot resolve the issue, though. yet, this is a possibility that cannot be ignored by the PDP leadership.
