A whistle-blower and potential ward councillor candidate were allegedly attacked and stabbed in Pietermaritzburg during an ANC nomination meeting.

Thabiso Zulu was beaten up during an ANC meeting over the weekend to nominate ward councillors while Mlungisi Zondi was stabbed ahead of the November 1 local government elections.

The ANC’s Senzo Sibisi who was present at the meeting said Zondi is in a critical condition in hospital.

Sibisi said Zondi was attacked when some raised his name to be ward candidate.

“The ANC must address the issue of violence and intimidation, or else people will not vote for the party,” said Zondo.

Zondo said the community nominated Zondi for the position of ward councillor.

The incident happened last Saturday, the same day when three women were killed in Inanda outside Buhlebethu Primary School after an ANC meeting to nominate a ward councillor candidate.

Zulu, who blew the whistle on corruption at Umzikhulu Local Municipality, was a known ally of the late former ANC youth league secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa, who was shot dead in 2017.

Fearing for his life, Zulu asked for protection after he exposed corruption in Umzimkhulu.

He also survived an assassination attempt in 2019.

Violence monitor Mary de Hass asked the provincial and national ANC-led government to intervene and stop the violence.

“I regard these allegations in a very serious light. As you know, Zulu narrowly missed being killed in 2019,” said de Hass.

She said this was worrying, especially after reports that police resources were used in some politically motivated killings in KZN, which saw more than 33 people murdered ahead of the 2016 local government elections.

The police confirmed the case of stabbing and said no arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, the ANC’s deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte pleaded for peace among party members.
