Zweli Mkhize said he is ready to challenge Ramaphosa for ANC presidency

Former health minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize has made it plain that he will run for the ANC presidency if the governing party's branches select him for the role. This comes as the African National Congress prepares for its national elective convention in December. The former minister told a group of Amabutho and Izinduna (Zulu Regiments and traditional leaders) who attended the traditional wedding of his son, Dedanimabhunu Mkhize, that he will do whatever the ANC structures ask of him. This was in response to a plea from traditional elders gathering at Mkhize's Willowton house in Pietermaritzburg for him to run for the ANC leadership.

Mkhize stated that he has always dedicated himself to public service and that he is willing to continue doing so if party branches want it. "ANC branches will meet and make their decisions, but I can guarantee you that if they approach me, I will be ready to serve as I always have." "I have served even during the harsh periods of apartheid, but I will continue to serve, and we will accept whatever decision they make," Mkhize added. He also informed the crowd that he believes some politicians are conspiring with private firms and journalists to smear his reputation. "It has become evident that some political figures are cooperating with huge corporations, paying private detectives and investigative journalists to dig up anything, including information dating back to 2005, when I was the province's finance minister." We are aware that some of the queries posed are backed by powerful politicians," he stated.

SYMBOLIC SUPPORT

Mkhize was then given a leopard hide by traditional chiefs as a token of their support for the upcoming leadership contest. "As traditional leaders in KwaZulu-Natal, we wish to provide Khabazela [Mkhize's clan name] support to lead us the nation," Induna Dumisani Cele, who represented the Johannesburg-based hostels, stated. Bathabile Dlamini and Dakota Legoete, both senior ANC members, were also present at the wedding. Mkhize also took time to clarify the charges in the Digital Vibes article that the health department handed Mkhize's partners an erroneous R150 million contract. He told guests gathered at his property that he had requested a review of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report because he believed they had reached the incorrect conclusions about him.

RULE OF LAW

Ironically, Dedani was getting married to Sithokozile Mkhize (previously Mthembu), who was cited as benefiting from the Digital Vibes deal when over R1 million was spent at the Midlands Mall in Pietermaritzburg to open a Tammy Taylor nail bar for her and a hair salon for her spouse. The former minister of health has denied any knowledge of public funds flowing from his department to his family. He claimed that he was according to legal procedures because he believed in the rule of law.
