The department of basic education has shocked many people when it announced that the matric results will not be published in the newspapers in order to comply with POPIA. The department said that, publishing the results will be in contravention with the new act which is the Protection of Personal Information Act.
Many people in the country had mixed views on the matter. Others saw this as a positive move, while media houses saw it a slap on the face after collaborating with the department for so long.
South African National Editors Forum, SANEF has launched a court bid challenging the decision by the department. The court challenge could impact the release of the results if it not dealt with as a matter of urgency.
The Department has established a relationship with media houses and their announcement caught many by surprise. The next few days will be critical as the day to release the results draw closer and closer.
