Cope and the family of Papi Diratsagae Kganare, the party's Secretery General, have confirmed that he has died from covid 19. The former Free State Education MEC died earlier this evening, around 18:30 pm at Johannesburg's Life Flora Hospital, according to Cope national spokesperson Dennis Bloem.
Kganare, who is survived by his wife and four children, has been sick with covid for over month, a period he spent in hospital.
A family spokesperson who happened to be Kganare's brother in law, Reginald Jordan said Kganare and his wife were admitted to hospital more than a month ago, but his wife was discharged a fortnight later while Kganare remained hospitalised till his death.
Bridget is still on oxygen support and has taken the news of her husband's passing very badly, she is distraught. We are trying to come to terms with this great loss. Mr Kganare was a very family orientated person.
According to Jordan the couple's daughter nd granddaughter also contracted the disease but both recovered.
"It has been a very difficult time for all of us ever since Mr and Mrs Kganare had contracted Covid-19. They were in hospital together at the same time. The daughter and granddaughter are still young so they recovered," said Jordan.
The two men have known each other since the 70s when they worked together in the Free State.
