In Shock As Another Mayor Resigns

Although South Africans in their numbers celebrated the removal of the ANC from several municipalities following their dismal performance on November 1 Municipal Polls, and with a number of councils hung, they needed coalition arrangements to form governments, there existed concerns regarding the chaotic nature of such arrangements, and it has really not taken long for cracks to appear as another mayor has resigned barely a month in office.

The Inkatha Freedom Party together with the EFF had managed to wrestle power from the ANC at the uMhlathuze municipality in Kwazulu-Natal and installed councilor, Dr. Nkonzoyakhe Donda.

He did not specify as to why he decided to unceremoniously quit his position.

Dr. Donda handed in his resignation to the municipal manager, Lulamile Mapholoba who stated that the council will hold an urgent meeting on Friday to deal with the resignation and potentially set a date for the election of a new mayor as the municipality which has the third biggest budget in KZN needs to have its positions filled to deliver services to the people.

"We have received a resignation letter from Cllr Donda and we are processing such according to relevant prescripts and internal procedures. Councillor Donda has only resigned in the executive committee position meaning he relinquishes the mayoral position as of the date stated in his letter," Mapholoba said in a statement.

This development is really a huge indictment on coalitions in the country, some people have said coalitions are the future as far as politics are concerned, but it seems there is a desperate lack of maturity in so far as navigating them.

uMhlathuze is probably the second municipality in as many days whereby a mayor has resigned. A fortnight ago, the EFF instructed what was their newly-appointed mayor in Metsimaholo to resign.

Similarly, Metros in Gauteng where there are virtually coalitions all over the place, are facing plenty of uncertainty as it relates to the formation of municipal committees as discussions are currently underway.

What do you make of Donda's quick resignation? Are coalitions not particularly sustainable?
