SA In Shock || RET 'Chap' Takes Jo'burg Mayoral Gig

South Africans, particularly those who reside in the City of Johannesburg, were not really content about the appointment of Mpho Moerane as the new Metropolitan's mayor.

Moerane was elected unapposed earlier this morning to take over the position which had been left vacant following the untimely passing away of former mayor Jolidee Matongo, who died in a horrific car accident in September.

The Greater Johannesburg Regional treasurer, had been serving as MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services. However, despite Moerane having taken the position on an interim basis - he is likely going to be in office for less than 40 days as elections are set to take place and new leadership will emerge from whichever party takes the spoils.

Similarly, there are those who expressed shock that, Moerane, who is a low-key proponent of the RET brigade, has been dismally failing to render services to the City during his time as MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services portfolio, they alleged that he has allowed City Power and the infrastructure to dilapidate in the City on his watch.

Others though, felt, the mere fact that he will only serve for a short time, makes for a good reason, as he will only act as a caretaker. There was also contention that the ANC quickly appointed a mayor to ensure they can get as much resources as they can to utilise in their campaign at the local government elections.

It must be remembered that the ANC got the mayoralty position through the back door - no pun intended - as they were ousted by a DA and EFF coalition after the 2016 LGE.

But they managed to wrestle the position after then DA mayor Herman Mashaba abdicated his position in 2019, following a break down of relations with his DA comrades over his close proximity with the EFF.

All factors considered, the new man at the helm will be certainly hoping to make his mark in the short time that he will be in office, of course with the hope of returning in the position post elections, but that will be down to the voters when they go to the polls on 1 November.

If there are any Joburger's here, how do you feel about Moerane's appointment as the new executive mayor of the City. Did he do enough in his previous portfolio to inspire confidence that will deliver?
