It was early last year when the African National Congress National Executive Council passed a resolution suspending the party's secretary general, Ace Magashule, for violating the step aside rule.
This is after he was charged with corruption. He has been in and out of the courts since then. However, it appears as though things are beginning to change. Initially accused with more than ten counts, he now faces only three charges, with the remainder being withdrawn.
There are now allegations that the National Prosecuting Authority lacks witnesses for the charges brought against him. If this is the case, the former Free State premier Ace Magashule's prospects of walking free are extremely strong.
Magashule asserts that he is unaware of the R255 million Free State asbestos housing project. He claims that the corruption charges against him are a political ruse designed to keep him out of the ruling party's secretariat.
