From blaming SABC to slamming EFF: 5 key quotes from Mbalula's post-election address

ANC head of elections Fikile Mbalula has blamed the governing party's performance at the polls on several issues, including the SABC and former president Jacob Zuma's arrest. On Thursday, Mbalula briefed the media on the outcome of coalition talks following the municipal elections earlier in November. His briefing followed a lengthy Twitter thread in which he claimed the ANC won the regions but opposition parties “ganged up” on them.

Here are five key quotes from Mbalula's address:

ANC's biggest lossThe most significant losses occurred in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. That's where the most voters were lost, and the Western Cape stepped in to save the day. Then there's Limpopo, where the ANC is in charge without a hitch. We don't have coalitions in Limpopo because we did well, but it's still the ANC vs the ANC, with people going to court against one other.

The ANC was penalized at the polls for failing to persuade SA that it was fighting corruption – Mbalula Fikile Mbalula, the ANC's head of elections, confessed that voters punished the party for failing to deliver on its commitment to combat corruption.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) was a major issue.

You run a program named Gauge during the local government elections.

You were putting the ANC on the back foot with that program. You were displaying our fragility in all of these majority communities.

Against a merciless SABC, I did my job to the best of my ability. Without a doubt, you have contributed to the unpleasant atmosphere and supported the campaign of people not voting in large numbers. How can you persuade someone to vote when there is a daily broadcast campaign proclaiming "I'm not going to vote"?

Mbalula's charges of 'ruthless' reporting on the ANC are dismissed by the SABC.

Fikile Mbalula's attempts to blame the SABC for the ANC's dismal election result have been rejected by the national broadcaster.

"Our numbers in eThekwini have plummeted, which is why there is a coalition." Thank you to the province's leadership, led by [premier] Sihle Zikalala, and smaller political parties

Thank you as well to our comrades in eThekwini, who confronted the issue of ANC unity. We'll work on it with our colleagues over there. It would be very appreciated if additional ANC leaders could assist. We have no objections to that, but we are aware that this was the result of long days and nights.

The ANC was 'heavily' influenced by low voting turnout.

The ANC has been severely harmed by the storm of low voter turnout. There are a number of considerations, including holding the election on a Monday. Do you want to use that as a justification? No, we recognize that we are up against a greater obstacle. What exactly is the problem? The people will never be on our side if the ANC does not fully implement its renewal program.

What exactly is this renewal program? A transformed organization that is returning to its core ideals. An organization that isn't just for families but also for individuals. An organization that is steadfast in its anti-corruption stance is one that is committed to good governance.

The EFF has never backed the ANC "Since its inception, the EFF has never supported the ANC. We were only taking a gamble at this point because the political dynamics had most likely calmed down. It was always the same.

The EFF is unable to explain why they would donate their votes to the DA on a political level. They don't want us to govern because they don't want us to? Fine. It's good if they use the DA to prevent us from governing. However, they have previously stated that they will abstain, but have not done so.
