Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor candidate for Ward 20 in Msunduzi Municipality was assassinated.
Thulani Shangase was shot in the Herwood neighbourhood of Caluza, Pietermaritzburg, on Sunday afternoon.
Mpulo stated that he proceeded to the shop where they were to meet.
"We've been told by attendees at the conference that he received a phone call and stepped outside to answer it, which is when he was shot," he said.
Mpulo stated that while they cannot know whether his assassination was motivated by politics, they are waiting for police to investigate.
"We are aware of a high level of political intolerance in the Edendale area, although we are unsure whether this is tied to politics at the moment."
This is a significant setback for the party. He was such a diligent worker, and he was determined to assist [the residents of] Ward 20.
"We hoped that the EFF would win ward 20 in the next municipal elections."
He stated that they will not rest till they ascertain the truth regarding his assassination. He stated that they will press the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation.
Mpulo stated that they will be paying a visit to the family today.
Sergeant Sfiso Gwala of the Plessislaer Authorities Department said that police are investigating a murder case. Nobody has been apprehended.
