ConCourt to decide on Zuma's fate this Friday

Zuma will find out his fate on Friday when the ConCourt rules on his request to have his contempt sentence overturned.

The Supreme Court said in a tweet on Thursday that its decision on former President Jacob Zuma's application will be made at 10 a.m. on Friday.

South Africans will find out on Friday whether former President Jacob Zuma's prison sentence should be overturned.

Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court at the end of June after he refused to appear before the state capture commission despite the apex court's order.

Zuma then filed a restraining order with the court. Although an order of the Constitutional Court cannot be appealed, the ConCourt's rules include some Uniform Rules of Court rules that apply to all other courts.

A court may “rescind or vary an order or judgment erroneously sought or erroneously granted in the absence of any party affected thereby,” according to Rule 42.

The court said in a tweet on Thursday that its decision on Zuma's application would be made at 10 a.m. on Friday.

“Judgment will be held on Friday, September 17... Is the Constitutional Court's judgment and order imprisoning former President Zuma for contempt of court reversible? And should it be put on hold?” the court asked on its official Twitter account.
