ANC 'FIRES' Another Prominent Mayor

We can only speculate if the African National Congress' newly-found urgency in dealing with unfit public representatives has anything to do with the upcoming local government elections, political parties tend to play to the gallery by appearing as if they acting against wrongdoing to present a good picture to the electorate.

Barring of course the recent years of President Cyril Ramaphosa reign, the ANC hardly dealt with its members who are alleged to have to involved in wrongdoing, corruption in particular.

Public resources are always diverted from their intended beneficiaries (the poor) to fill pockets of politicians, but it seems the party now wants to embark on a different.

The ANC's in the OR Tambo District Municipality has decided enough was enough after they swung the axe on executive mayor, Thokozile Sokhanyile. She has been accused of abetting corruption and effectively demonstrating lackadaisical leadership in failing to subject herself Committee tasked with the running of the municipality.

She was ousted in a vote of no confidence in which atleast 68 of the 70 members of the council voted for her to vacate her office.

The speaker of the council, Xolile Nkompela confirmed to News24, that Sokhanyile's flagrant abuse of protocol and her failure not to want to be subjected to scrutiny was the main cause of her ultimate demise.

"The Mayor, honorable Sokhanyile, demonstrated a desperate lack of competence and leadership in executing her duties, which has in many ways contributed to calamitous state of the Municipality that is failing to discharge its responsibilities to the citizens, during her term, the municipality failed to complete any of the infrastructure development project it was embarking on, thus, it is for this reason that she was sacked," Nkompela said.

Besides her lackadaisical leadership, she is also alleged to have swept a delicate corruption matter regarding a R28 million tender which was unlawfully awarded.

An inference can be made that the ANC could have acted a lot more quicker against someone they knew all along was doing absolutely nothing that was of service to the people, but the timing of their move has electioneering written all over it.
