Dr Motsoaledi reportedly provided clarity on the roles of BMA and SANDF at the borders

Clarity was reportedly issued by the Minister of Home Affairs Dr Aaron Motsoaledi on the purpose of the guards of the Border Management Agency (BMA) .He said that they were to safeguard the borders.

However , as for the SANDF , it was stated that it would still protect and safeguard the country’s borders . Areas covered by the SANDF are inclusive of the maritime coastline and the land borders.

Dr Motsoaledi reportedly revealed this as he responded to parliamentary questions which had been posted by the DA Member of Parliament Adrian Roos . The MP had asked the difference between the duties of Border Management Authority and those of the SANDF.

This came following comments that were made by the SANDF that it would be illegal for any organisation to patrol any part of the border .

The Minister said that the responsibility of the border patrol guards included the general border management activities , as well as security work . He said that the aim was to achieve effective and efficient management of the border .It was also revealed that the Border Management Agency would operate in 2023 .The movement of goods and people will be controlled and managed by the BMA .

The duty of the members of SANDF remains conducting  protection and safeguarding territorial integrity of the country by patrolling the land border areas , inclusive of the maritime as required.
