How Nasir El-Rufai Went From Being Nicknamed "Mai Rusau" To A Master Builder

In the run-up to the 2015 election, Mallam Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai was referred to as "Mai Rusau," which means "the demolisher." On the other hand, supporters of Malam Nasir El-Rufai spun it in a positive light. They claimed that Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai was on a mission to demolish injustice, corruption, and bad governance.

Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai was elected, and the nickname stuck. He reformed the civil service, education, and health sectors, and his current focus is on infrastructure development in Kaduna state.

Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai is one man that cannot be distracted from his unwavering efforts to turn around the state's fortunes. Infrastructure, health, education, and security have been prioritized in his administration's policy agenda. And he surprised many of his critics by refusing to operate outside of his campaign promises.

Governor El-Rufai has already established an unbeatable track record in changing the face of governance in Kaduna. Wastage has been eliminated, and participatory governance has taken centre stage, with the masses contributing to the state budget for many years.

Aside from new roads, some existing roads have been designated for dualization or improvement due to their strategic importance. The reworking of the Kawo bridge to a double 3-lane flyover with three rotaries (roundabouts) underneath is also noteworthy.

Massive infrastructure investments, combined with outstanding policies to maintain and sustain them, are what distinguishes societies in terms of development. In terms of infrastructure development in Nigeria, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, and Lagos state come to mind.

Their extensive road networks, modernized building structures, availability of relaxation areas, quality schools, advanced and easily accessible healthcare facilities, and tourist attractions set them apart from the rest of the states. Indeed, Kaduna State has been suffering from a lack of these for several years.

True, no one is perfect, but Governor Nasir El-Rufai has given democratic governance his best shot in the last five years. I dare to say this in light of the global economic downturn caused by the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic, which brought many nations to their knees. If we don't applaud the man for doing his best under difficult circumstances, we should not join blind critics in condemning him at all.
