Following the 1 November Municipal Polls in which quite a substantial number of municipalities were hung and needed coalition arrangements to perform their perfunctory duties, a debate ensued regarding the nature of coalition arrangements and how chaotic and messy they have proved to be.
It has barely taken a month for the first coalition arrangement to fall off, with reports indicating that the ANC at the Kannaland municipality in the Western Cape has decided to cut the agreement they had struck with the Independent Civic Organisation of SA (ICOSA).
The agreement had seen Jeffrey Donson appointed as the new Mayor.
However, Donson is quite a compromised figure as he is a certified sexual offender after he was convicted for rape in 2008, for which he received a suspended 5-year sentence.
The ANC received widespread criticism for its association with Donson and they have since decided to end their association with him and his party.
As part of the agreement, the ANC had sent their candidate as the speaker of the council nonetheless a decision has been taken to recall the speaker.
"While we respect and uphold the democratic wishes of the people of Kannaland who have on successive occasions chose to elect Icosa as the majority party, the extended interim provincial committee (IPC) resolved to mandate the negotiating team to review the coalition agreement," the ANC said before taking the decision.
Most of the criticism was against the premise that the country is currently facing the scourge of Gender-Based violence, which is why South Africans were overghasted and flabberwhelmed by the decision to support the Mayoral candidacy of a convicted rapist, as it was basically an insult to the fight against GBV.
It is one's opinion that although the ANC's decision is not based on principle, it atleast highlight the fact that society can put pressure on political parties to act in the right way.
More important, it's a win for women in their fight against GBV that Donson will not receive any support from the ANC henceforth.
