Department of Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga insisted that school uniforms will never be scrapped in public schools. This is because of the inequality that will be laid bare should such a move be endorsed.
The minister said that, young people preferred designer clothes and if one does not have them they might choose not to attend school. She said young people will never wear torn clothes, and removing school uniform will expose their level of poverty and drive them away from schools. She said this at the signing of the memorandum of understanding between The School Governing bodies and the competition commission.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding comes after a lengthy investigation by the competition commission on the cost of school uniforms and exclusive rights given to some sellers. Parents reported that school uniforms were sold by exclusive rights holders at exorbitant prices.
The minister insisted that, the uniform helps hide the inequality in schools, but high prices can lead to exclusion of those who cannot afford.
Should South Africa abolish the wearing of school uniform in public schools. Please share your thoughts in the comment section.
