Afriforum takes Home Affairs to task over border guards at Beitbridge border post

South Africa's department of Home Affairs decision of your deploy border guards has been met with disdain by Afriforum

Afriforum has hinted that the decision by Aaron Motsoaledi does not within the confines of the constitution.

It claims that due processes were not followed rendering the border guards illegal.

According to AfriForum’s spokesperson on community safety, Jacques Broodryk, the legislation pertaining to the Border Management Act, which would empower the Department of Home Affairs and the BMA to deploy the guards, had not yet been gazetted.

The border guards were deployed at the Beitbridge border post as a way of dealing with South Africa's porous borders.

Their main functions were gazetted by the home affairs minister Motsoaledi.

Their progress in dealing with the rampant corruption has not yet been laid bare.

Afriforum added that the guards were not adequately trained and this could become a problem.

“This would mean that these guards currently have less arresting powers than an ordinary citizen, acting in their personal capacity.”
