This week on Dloz'lami as per usual we got to learn so much Thembi. But this weeks lesson hit close to home to a lot of people. There are so many woman-headed households it is ridiculous. The levels of poverty and pain that accompany this are evidence that Thembi's lesson rings true. Deadbeat fathers block the progress and prosperity of their children. Mathapelo was a disheartening example of that.
Not only was she born from incest, but she had to deal with a paternal family that rejected her. Her grandmother who spoke up during the consultation acknowledged her fault. However, in a twist that is becoming very common, she also admitted to making her sick. I fail to understand why this is the case. Is there no other way to communicate other than to make your intended audience ill?
Three families in total were fighting for the right to have Mathaphelo amongst them but due to her maternal grandfather that did NOT pay lobola or damages for her mother and her own father choosing to follow suite, she had to use the Dlamini surname. This has resulted in illness and her life being on pause while she tended to her illness of the womb.
The mistakes of the men in her life have even trickled down to her children. One of whom went mute when they 5 and the other who was diagnosed with a kidney disease. It is clear that had the right thing been done, it wouldn't be happening. Mathapelo has the support of her aunt, her mother's half-sister and with her by her side, they fixed the mistakes of the two men who have long been deceased.
It is disappointing to say the least. When will it become clear that children are not a moment of ejaculation, but a long life commitment. You can't decide to opt out whenever you want.
