Members of the International Association of Professional Birth Photographers (IAPBP) captured these spectacular images of a water birth. Lyndsay Stradtner of Life in Motion Photography founded the IAPBP in 2010, and it now has over 1,400 members from 37 countries. These photographers work with families who wish to photograph their child's birth, and the results are just stunning.
Certain women prefer water births in a bathtub or inflatable pool, whether at home or in a birthing center. In certain facilities, water births is also an option. "The logic for water delivery is that because the baby has already been in the amniotic fluid sac for nine months, birthing in a similar environment is softer for the infant and less stressful for the mother," according to the American Pregnancy Association's website. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, water birth is an "experimental practice that should only be undertaken within the context of a suitably designed clinical study with informed consent."
SELF asked members of the IAPBP community to submit some of their most powerful photographs. The final product was wonderful, representing a wide range of birth experiences. Many of the photographs featured mothers who decided to give birth or labor in the water.
Here are 11 stunning images:
Despite the fact that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists considers water birth to be a "experimental procedure that should only be performed within the context of an appropriately designed clinical trial with informed consent," hospitals are increasingly offering women the option of laboring or giving birth in a warm water pool.
Proponents of water births point out a number of advantages. By giving non-medicinal pain relief, reducing blood pressure, increasing relaxation, and providing non-medicinal pain relief, it helps the woman feel more in control during childbirth and labor. Because the buoyancy of water helps the baby go down the birth canal by removing some of the excess pregnancy weight, it's simpler to get into different postures.
