Teenage pregnancy is a national crisis

The rate of teenagers getting pregnant is on the rise. New figures from Gauteng Department of Health show that more than 23000 girls under 18 gave birth between April 2020 and March 2021,of which 934 were aged under 14 compared to 14,577 girls aged 19 and under having babies in the same period a year ealier. It seems that teenage pregnancy jumped to 60% during Covid19 pandemic.

Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshega has expressed concerns over the alarming number of teenage pregnancies. She says her department will be intensifying the implementation of sex education programm. She also mentioned that the society needs to also stand and fight against this crisis. She went on to say any unwanted pregnancy leads to poverty.

People had to weigh in their opinions. Some said it stems from deep rooted socio-economic factors. They also believe it has to do with this generation's bahavior and the many constitutional rights they have. Some parents say they cant even discipline their children anymore.
