Twenty-two years ago there was a lone female major general in the SA National Defence Force (SANDF). Today the force counted six female two-star generals out of 40.
There seems to be an understanding and support for the policies of addressing equal opportunities, traditional cultural beliefs or stereotypes about women still shape and influence the acceptance and the non-acceptance of women in combat roles.
The primary function of the SANDF is to defend South Africa against external military aggression, its citizens and national interests against aggression committed by forces of another state or group of states, excluding the use of nuclear weapons (para-military groupings conducting operations that are in conflict with the Constitutional order of South Africa). The other functions are secondary. However, it is important to highlight that, whenever a need arises, the SANDF is expected to render services to the communities of South Africa.
Soldiers are doing a lot. The SANDF (South African National Defence Force) has both male and females. Back then it was male dominated, but not anymore. Women nowadays are soldiers and I have realised that too many of them are dazzlingly beautiful.
Their beauty does not imply that they do not know how to do their job properly. The women in the SANDF are not to be messed around with. They are tough like sedimentary rocks.
Being a woman in a male-dominated industry means that you will experience ageism and possibly harassment throughout your career. Some industries can be a tough place when you're in the minority as a woman in a masculine place of work. My advice is simple: If you are uncomfortable with something, voice your opinion.
Tips for women to be successful in the male dominated workplace :
1. Be accountable. Accountability means saying what you are going to do and doing what you said you would do.
2. Have confidence.
3. Use effective communication skills and be self-aware.
4. Show empathy and honesty.
5. Strive to be inspirational and optimistic.
