Garmin Releases New GPS Units With Large Displays, Saying Goodbye to Google Maps

While cutting-edge navigation has become a must-have these days, not everyone is a fan of Google Maps, so standalone GPS units such as those from Garmin continue to have a very successful niche of their own.

As a result, despite the fact that more people are turning to apps installed on their mobile devices, Garmin has no reason to stop investing in GPS navigators, so the company announced a new lineup of such products today, specifically designed to help drivers easily reach a specific address.

The Garmin DriveSmart 66, 76, and 86 have high-definition displays that can be used in portrait or landscape mode, depending on how you want to see the road ahead.

The DriveSmart lineup also includes new-generation features such as driver alerts, hands-free calling, and a built-in Garmin voice assistant to easily interact with your GPS navigation and simply ask it for directions and everything else.

Alexa support is also available for music playback, and the device's built-in Wi-Fi allows for easy map and software updates without the need to connect to a PC.

Garmin claims that it has focused specifically on features that are intended to make driving safer overall, such as warnings for upcoming speed changes, sharp curves, and other hazards. In other words, it's getting a taste of Waze, though all of these warnings come pre-loaded with the device and aren't updated in real-time like the Google app.

However, as long as the GPS navigator is synced with a mobile phone, Garmin's Drive app allows the GPS navigator to receive all kinds of useful live information, such as real-time traffic, weather, and fuel prices.

Garmin is selling its new navigators at very reasonable prices, with the cheapest model costing only $249.99. The Garmin DriveSmart 86, with the largest screen in the series, costs $349.99 in the United States.
