The Minister Of Police Bheki Cele has indicated that there is a shortage of over 14 000 recruits that has been caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since it's outbreak the process to recruiting and training applicants has been on a standstill due to the restrictions and protocols that has to be followed to reduce infections.
We have seen the results of this during the unrest that happened in parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal where there was a shortage of law enforcement officers to attend to affected areas. Shopping centres, malls and ATM's were looted which led to some of the establishments being destroyed. It was expected for 7000 new recruits to join the force last year which did not happen that's why the number has doubled.
At this point there hasn't been any developments or resolutions to this matter. What are your thoughts about this shortage and how does it affect you?
