A 21-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison plus ten years in prison for raping and setting fire to an 18-year-old minor in 2019. Karabo Bahurutshe was condemned by the North West High Court in Mahikeng on Friday. Captain Sam Tselanyane, a police spokeswoman, stated that Bahurutshe was convicted following an extensive and comprehensive investigation.
On 1 December 2019, Bahurutshe stabbed Gomolemo Legae many times, poured her with gasoline, and set her ablaze in Ramosadi hamlet, outside Mahikeng. Legae suffered third-degree burns and died as a result of her injuries. When a member of the community heard Legae's screams, he ran to help. She was able to identify the assailant as Bahurutshe.
The next day, Bahurutshe was handed up to the police by his brother. He was subsequently arrested and charged with rape and murder. Bahurutshe had been detained until his sentence because the police had successfully challenged his bail. According to Tselanyane, he was finally sentenced to life in jail for murder and ten years for rape.
