Eskom has declared that stage 2 load shedding will take place from 9 p.m. on Thursday until 5 a.m. on Friday.
Load shedding will resume from 9 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Saturday to replenish emergency generation reserves, according to spokeswoman Sikonathi Mantshantsha.
Since July 22, the power company has not used load shedding. “Emergency reserves have been depleted faster than expected due to further breakdowns of a generating unit each at Kriel and Tutuka power stations today. Delays in returning generating units at Tutuka, Grootvlei and Kendal have also contributed to the depletion of emergency reserves,” said Mantshantsha.
“Total failures total 14,982MW, with 5,334MW of scheduled maintenance capacity. It may be required to maintain load shedding during the day and over the weekend if the emergency generating reserves do not recover adequately."
If there are any significant modifications to the electrical grid, the utility said it would notify customers as soon as possible.
"While Eskom expects a number of producing units to return to service over the next few days due to failures, we advise the public to decrease their usage and continue to use electricity wisely to help avert load shedding."
