'Zimbabweans please open your eyes about the vaccine' - OPINION

With the few negative comments about the Sinopharm vaccine just delivered to Zimbabwe, in one really fast-tracked operation we must share a few shots around this pandemic with a local focusThe 200k doses will cover just over 1% of the population: the journey has only just begun. Let us agree that the SA, variant is a recent challenge in the fast race to find a vaccine

So it was not going to be possible for the world to defer all their progress, on the original virus just to accommodate the emerging SA variant and research for it. Our proximity to South Africa is acknowledged, yes, but we cannot assume that only the SA variant will infect ZimbabweansThe race for C19 cure/vaccine has to measure the merits of these early options against waiting for the perfect drug. At all costs, or as far as possible, let's avoid A ZIMBABWE consignment (or African even)

Let us never find ourselves accepting a uniquely Zimbabwean drug risk. We must only expose ourselves to options that are being offered elsewhere, including the countries of origin of any vaccine offered

Our biggest problem is procurement or access to the vaccine options - it is NOT the cost. And I am still against asking our broke government to perform the funding miracle alone, without seeking cost contributions from those who can afford any of the optionsThe cost of the vaccine is similar to many other medicines humans take. The cost of some of the vaccine options is lower than your doctor's fees. Definitely the vaccine is cheaper than any funeral
