Bafana Bafana lost 1-0, to Ghana in their final 2022 Soccer World Cup group qualifier and Rushine DeRueck who is a central defender of Bafana Bafana is responsible for that loss because of the penalty he allegedly caused. Senegalese referee Moguetta Ndiaye awarded to Ghana a penalty alleging DeReuck that he pushed Ghanaian striker Daniel Amartey in the penalty area. Andre Ayew converted it into a goal which dashed Bafana Bafana's dream to qualify to play in the world cup in 2022.
When the referee blew the final whistle, Rushine DeReuck broke down and sobbed. Ronwen Williams tried to get him up, comforting him.
“I’ve lost finals; I don’t recall myself crying. But in that game – it was probably the biggest game of my international career and not only for me but the other guys as well – to see the younger players in the team go through that and see officials killing us with the decisions they were making, it's sad.
At that point I didn’t even think about the match being replayed. I was part of it [the penalty incident] and he booked me and that disappointed me. I knew what it would have meant for the country. I had a lot of emotions and I just broke down because we wanted it so badly.”
Rushine De Reuck hails from Cape Town andhe started his professional football career playing for Hellenic before joining Maritzburg between 2017–2021. He said he got so much support from players and people.
