Poor security at military bases alarming

The Defense Force Service Commission has said that the lack of security at South African National Defense Force military bases is of “serious concern”, as is the deterioration of security fences within military bases and on the borders.

Security fences within military bases and units and on the borders are falling apart while budget constraints hamper the upgrading, repair of security systems and maintenance. Soldiers guarding South Africa's military bases are not adequately armed, and there is no control over who moves in and out of the facilities.

Security systems cannot be repaired or maintained due to expired contracts. Increasing levels of crime and theft were reported at some units, especially at Personnel Services School. The Defense Force Service Commission recommends that Security personnel be adequately armed with weapons, bulletproof gear ammunition, and torches. Electronic and night vision equipment be standardized and made available to Operation Corona bases.
