How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies: 7 Easy Ways to Kill Fruit Flies

Here are some very clever ways to get rid of the fruit flies that are accompanied by the fresh produce we get from farmer’s markets.

Pesky fruit flies are the unwelcome guests at our house that in no time take over our kitchen. No matter how much we try to keep the food packs sealed and covered they somehow always find a way to feast on the kitchen produce. Here are seven very effective ways to get rid of fruit flies.

Unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Pour some unfiltered apple cider vinegar into an empty bottle and keep it uncovered for the fruit flies to get attracted to its sweet smell and get trapped in it. You may create an alternative trap by adding some of this vinegar to a glass and then covering it with plastic wrap. Just poke a few holes for the flies to enter but keep the size of the hole small for them to find it difficult to exit the trap.

Vinegar and soap solution. Add a little soap solution to a bowl of vinegar and leave it uncovered for the flies to get trapped and sink in it.

Make a paper cone. In a jar, add a little vinegar and a few chunks of ripened fruit. Make a cone by rolling a piece of paper and placing the narrow end inside the jar for the fruit flies to be drawn in but not able to exit the jar trap.

Milk solution. Make a solution by simmering a pint of milk, 2 ounces of ground pepper, and 4 ounces of sugar in a pan for 10 minutes. Pour this milk solution into a shallow dish and keep it uncovered for the flies to get trapped in it.

Red wine. Wine also is a sweet-smelling liquid and keeping the wine bottle open will help to trap the flies as they will find it difficult to exit the narrow bottleneck.

Fly punch. You may use the commercially available fly punch if your DIY home remedies do not work. This is also a natural mixture and you just have to open its jar and let the fruit flies get attracted to its sweet smell.

Fly strip. Fly strips are a rather convenient, easy to use, and non-messy alternative to capture the fruit flies as these are odorless and can be placed at any nook and corner of the house without worrying about any spillage. As a bonus, you might trap a few mosquitoes and regular house flies as well.
