Good day everyone, i hope that you are having a lovely Tuesday so far. Today i want to share with you photographs of a tribe of women who wear lip plates as a symbol of their beauty and identity.
The Mursi tribe is a tribe that lives in an isolated region of Ethiopia called Omo. The females from this tribe wear wooded plates in their lips which to them is a symbol of beauty, pride and identity.
The plates are worn by unmarried girls, newlymarried women and older women that have children. It is done by cutting the lower lip which is then held open by a plug until it starts to heal. The women decide how far they want their lips to be stretched. It is a painful process that takes time to heal.
The plates are removed if the husband dies.
