The man who is accused of beating up and pointing a gun at a teen in Groblersdal says he was attacked in prison and is always afraid of an attack that could kill him. Corrie Pretorius went to court on Friday at the Groblersdal Magistrate's Court. He wants to get out on bail. Pretorius said he was attacked while in custody in an affidavit that his lawyer, advocate JJ Venter, read out loud.
In his affidavit, Pretorius said, "Due to the nature of the charges and the allegations, which have been covered in detail by the media, my life is in danger in the correctional services."
It said in the affidavit:
As my lawyers told the SAPS, I have been severely beaten while in jail, and it cannot be said that I will not be beaten again. Pretorius also said that what happened to him in prison was very traumatic and that he was always afraid of an attack that could kill him. The State was against bail, so Sergeant Jappie Skosana, who was in charge of the investigation, was called to the stand.
Skosana said in court that while he was in jail, no one told him about the alleged attack on Pretorius. He also said that no case had been made about the supposed event. Skosana also said in court that he thought Pretorius was safer in jail and that he thought the accused would be in danger if he was let out on bail.
This was one of the reasons why bail shouldn't be granted. Pretorius was charged with pointing a gun and assaulting someone with the intent to do serious bodily harm. Police say that Pretorius and the teenager got into a fight over the use of seasoning at a fish and chips shop in town.
During a fight, Pretorius is said to have said that he wanted to use the seasoning first. Pretorius can be seen dragging the teenager around on the ground while carrying a gun in a video that appears to show part of the incident. Then, as the boy lies helpless on the ground, he kicks and stamps on him.
The request for bail goes on.
