President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced a list of 8 nominees for the position of Chief Justice. The announcement comes after Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe was been asked to consider taking over from Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng by the members of the Black Lawyers Association.
The candidates were chosen after President Cyril Ramaphosa opened the nomination of South Africa's next chief justice to the public and a panel of experts has made a recommendation to the president endorsing the list. Anyone was allowed to nominate but the name must be endorsed by a professional body of legal practitioners or NGOs working in the field of human rights.

South Africans are invited to submit any objections to the nominees by Friday, 15 October 2021.
