A pastor at the Itshe Lengumbi church in Benoni was found guilty of raping minors and received a sentence of two life sentences plus an additional 25 years in prison. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the events occurred between the years 2020 and 2021, when the youngsters were between the ages of three and nine years old. Lucky Magagula, age 36, was found guilty on many crimes, including rape, sexual assault, and grooming, by a panel of judges from the Pretoria High Court sitting in the Benoni Magistrates Court.
When the youngsters were at his house for choir practise and bible study, he sexually assaulted and committed all of these other offences against them. One of his victims was only three years old when they were killed.
"The NPA welcomes the sentence and hopes that it will send a strong message that crimes against children and women will not be tolerated," said NPA Regional Spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana. Judge Jay Monyemangene issued an order that Magagula's name be placed to the national registry for sexual offenders and that he be declared unfit to possess a firearm. Magagula was also ordered to have his right to possess a firearm revoked.
