Gender Based Violence in Khayelitsha took this chilling turn on Monday evening

Gender-Based Violence in Khayelitsha took a chilling turn on Monday evening when three women were reportedly executed. Their bodies were uncovered between their shacks after some gunshots.

This comes not long after the killing of Nomandla Mthathi by her boyfriend´s friend. There was also a discovery of a woman´s body that was found burnt near the Khayelitsha stadium in August.

The murder of Phumeza Nomzazi who was shot dead in August can´t be forgotten either. It is concerning that all these cases have taken place in Khayelitsha within two months. The devastating thing is that all the police have to say is that the investigations are still being conducted.

It is for this reason that the justice system should take real tough actions against the perpetrators of Gender-Based Violence in order to instill fear in them.

Fear can only be instilled when there is an introduction of the death penalty on all the killers of women and children. Life imprisonment is not enough to scare off the perpetrators of Gender-Based violence.

This is because they will be aware that they will kill and have a fresher life behind bars. This is not enough especially for the families of the victims. It is also worrying that in some instances, the killers of women and children get released on parole after serving some years. Since the perpetrators of violence against women are still out there, it would help to ensure that police are always out in the streets patrolling areas to help avoid some crimes from taking place.

The law enforcement agencies need to conduct stop and search operations in townships as crimes are always taking place there.

When there is thorough searching, weapons can be retrieved which in turn helps reduce the possibilities of crimes taking place. Men also need to help reduce Gender-Based Violence. Men should know that women are also human beings who need to be respected, protected, and loved. What role are you playing to protect women?
