A former nurse who impregnated an incapacitated woman at a facility where he was working has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Nathan Sutherland pleaded guilty to sexual abuse and vulnerable adult abuse.
The victim was a patient at Hacianda Healthcare facility in Arizona for 26 years after nearly drowning as a child. She is reportedly in a vegetated state. A vegetated state is a chronic case of brain dysfunction in which the victim shows no signs of awareness. The facility stated that no one noticed that she was pregnant until she gave birth to a healthy baby boy in 2018. The child is 3 years old now.
Investigators obtained DNA samples from all the employees in the facility and results showed that Sutherland was the father of the baby. The healthcare facility which has cooperated with authorities released a statement stating "our thoughts are with the victim and her loved ones and we hope that this chapter of the Sunderland case brings them peace".
The victim is no longer a patient at Hacienda Healthcare.
